NATIONAL

Michigan

The Albanian American Student Organization in Michigan was founded at Wayne State University in 1998.The organization was initiated from the idea of a handful of Albanian students at the Wayne State University in Michigan. The main objective of the organization is to promote fellowship among the Albanian students with other students around campus and to promote the Albanian language and culture as well.

Seeing the success this idea had among the Albanian students at the Wayne State University, other Albanian students at 4 other universities in Michigan decided to start their own chapters of AASO at their own college campuses. The dedication of our members has allowed us to be able to provide scholarships and other assistance to deserving Albanian students who seek a higher education since 1999 when we founded the Gjergj Kastrioti Scholarship fund. Today there are many successful active chapters of AASO not only in the US (Texas, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, etc.) but also in Canada and Australia. The organization participates in social events, fundraising efforts for the GKSF Scholarship, promotion & understanding of the Albanian culture, leadership development, volunteering efforts in our community events(including Mother Theresa Service Day), and political causes as they relate to Albania, Kosova and Montenegro. The organization has also successfully networked with other Albanian Student chapters across the USA with the hope that one day there will be a national Albanian American Student Organization where students could network and hold conferences across the country to broaden understanding and finding ways to support our community. There have been some evidence of this effort with the formation of the Texas chapters of AASO. Hopefully, as future leaders of the organizations read this they are inspired to work with their respective universities to get the funding and hold the first ever AASO National Conference.
